Route - Part 9
Capacho, Chiriquí, Panama to Colón, Panama
minimum 537 kms
Panama is another country where we intend to spend a fair amount of time.
From the beautiful beaches on the Golfo de Chiriqui and Santa Clara in Coclé
province to the rain forests and of course the magnificent Panama Canal. Just
sitting and watching the ships passing through the
Miraflores Lock is
mesmerizing.
Once we cross over
The Bridge of the
Americas, we will turn North and follow the Canal to the port city of Colón
on the Caribbean Sea.
We must load the whole truck and trailer rig onto a RoRo (Roll-on, Roll-off)
vessel for the next part of the trip.
The Pan-American Highway stretches all the way from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to
Ushuaia, Argentina except for a section at the South-East corner of Panama,
where Panama meets Columbia, called the
Darién Gap
and
where there is no road for almost 90 kms. Here there is swamp and forest (and
mosquitoes the size of small horses). Completion of the highway has been
proposed many times, but there are many factors standing in the way .
